Jacob & Kat

It was a chilly day in February 2023, and I was lugging my freelance makeup kit from my car into the studio. Jake was out in the alley doing something related to building Howdy. He saw me with my hands full and ran for the door I was heading to and asked if I needed any help. With the biggest, kindest smile I had ever seen, and without hesitation he grabbed my big bag and saw the large flight of stairs that led to where I was going. He insisted he help me up the stairs and said “neighbors take care of each other!” In a very sassy sweet way. (I’m sure you can hear this in his voice lol).

We chatted for a moment about owning small businesses and he shared his hopes for Howdy Bagel with me. It was right after I had cut my hair short and was feeling comfortable with my queerness. I was thrilled to hear about a queer inclusive space and so excited to support them. After several minutes of us chatting away, I realized my client was arriving any second and he goes “my husband’s probably wondering where I disappeared to!”

We said goodbye followed with the most comforting hug I’ve had from a stranger I just met.

From then on Jake remembered me by name and anytime I’d catch his eye in passing he would smile his beautiful smile and wave. If he was busy and saw me, he’d still make time to acknowledge me somehow whether it be a nod and smile, a wink, or a little shoulder movement if his hands were full.

He brought his Texas charm, his gorgeous smile, his contagiously joyful personality, and encapsulated us all in it with him. He made everyone he met feel seen and valued.

I’m so grateful to have witnessed the essence of Howdy through his eyes. I will never forget him.
