Jacob & Darby
I met Jake and Daniel in 2021 when they were at the Procters Farmers Market. I remember the first time I went, the line wasn't too long, I had gotten lucky. I introduced myself to Jake. He was so busy with orders, yet he still found time to greet me with a smile. After that, I began going every week. They had started to gain much deserved popularity and the lines were very long. It was worth it each time, not just for the bagels, but for the interactions with Jake, Daniel and Amber. He remembered my name and I stopped having to give it to them when I ordered. My family and I loved their bagels and I jumped at the opportunity when they opened their "Bagel Club" deliveries. I remember I was working graveyard shift, but I woke up 4 hours early to make sure I got a spot. After that, Jake delivered bagels to me every week. I enjoyed seeing what he would write on my bag each week. He always made each person feel special even though he had so many deliveries. I was so excited that they were opening a store front in Tacoma. As a queer young adult just starting out, it was so inspiring to me to see Jake and Daniel's love and dedication to each other and to their dream. I reached out to him to apply for the store when it opened. My schedule was too busy, but I am still grateful that I had the opportunity. Life got busy and I was only able to go to the store twice. It had been months since I had seen him, but he still remebered me and asked how I was doing. The store was beautiful. It was so welcoming to everyone who stepped through the doors. He had a way of making every person he interacted with feel special. He lit up the room and was so happy even though the Howdy team worked so damn hard every day. His loss is devastating. I feel his loss every day. Seeing how the Tacoma community and beyond have shown their support and love has been incredible to say the least. It shows just how much of an impact he had on people. Seeing people speak about him made me realize that he was himself no matter the situation. He shared a bit of his light with everyone he spoke to. Seeing how he lived his life in truth and positivity makes me strive to live a little like him each day. My heart goes out to Daniel, his close friends, family and loved ones. May you find peace during this time.
